Develop recommendations for utilizing CarMax Park beyond the baseball season.

Nearly 100 survey respondents gave us the lowdown on the Richmond events scene. Where they go, why they do it, and how often were all covered.

72% of respondents agreed...

“Richmond has the variety of events I’m looking for.”

The real challenge is standing out in an oversaturated market.

Richmond Raceway

Greater Richmond Convention Center

Brown’s Island

The Broadberry

Altria Theater

So we did some more asking around...

Interviews with Event Planners

Event planners shared their experiences planning the most popular and well-attended events in the Richmond area, including music festivals, concerts, markets, and outdoor experiences.

Interviews with Event Attendees

Event attendees shared their preferences and experiences with hearing about and attending events. They also told us what drives their decision-making, either to attend or avoid.

and they told us...

Stephen Lecky | Director of Events at Venture Richmond

“Many Richmond events are starting to feel generic — often just a food truck, beer, and a few vendors in a parking lot. The now-defunct Scott’s Addition Pumpkin Festival was nearly identical to Shamrock the Block.”
Lucas Fritz | Owner of The Broadberry

“Guests should always know where to enter, where merch is located, where the bars and bathrooms are, and how to navigate the space. If these things stay the same across events, the experience is easier and smoother. Changing... disrupts their experience.”
Ashley, 35

“I just want a place where I can relax, let loose, and spend time with my friends.”
Mark, 41

“I think Richmond already holds a lot of events, so I think it's just a matter of seeing more about these events before they happen versus seeing a lot of posts celebrating its success.”

An Emerging Industry Trend

Large-scale events are performing worse than small-scale events. In Richmond, events that prove successful year after year are unique to the city and its people and appeal to a particular niche. Events that are too broad struggle to highlight what makes them unique to Richmond, causing them to blend into the noise.

Stephen Lecky | Director of Events at
Venture Richmond

“When you try to cater to everyone, no one is fully happy, but when you cater to a smaller subset, you can curate an experience that people love and want to come back to year after year.”

of survey respondents said the people they’ll attend an event with somewhat influence their decision to go

Rachel, 43 and Ashley, 35

Rachel says she typically finds out about events through Ashley and will go if Ashley is going. She’s discovered a lot of fun events because other friends are going.

Emma, 35 and Trey, 38

Emma and Trey said they will go to events if they know someone who is going or putting them on, and Emma said she goes to a lot of events because Trey is going.

No Room For Mistakes

Event goers demand certain things from an event.  They seldom give second chances, and if word gets around, you might not even get a first one.

Stephen Lecky | Director of Events at Venture Richmond

“Things like having enough porta-potties, good food, and manageable lines can make or break an event experience. It’s crucial that these details are well thought out and executed.”
Emma, 35 and Trey, 38

They have attended other local music festivals and shows, but did not attend Iron Blossom because they heard parking was horrible and it wasn’t very well organized.
For 1 in 4 of our survey respondents, negative reviews heard from others discouraged or "de-influenced" the decision to attend a live event.
